释“[册口]”为“砍”再商榷

A new interpretation of (册口)

清代学者王念孙将删字看成形声字,认为删从册得声,古音支元两部相通。于省吾先生在释读甲骨文中(册口)字时据此推断古读册如删,进而得出征伐、祭祀之(册口)义同砍的结论。从古音学的视角进行考证可知,王念孙对删字构造方式和支元两部语音关系的认识有误,于先生的推论也缺乏足够的依据。

Wang Niansun, a scholar of the Qing dynasty, regarded the Chinese character 删 as a pictophonetic character whose pronunciation came from 册 with shared pronunciation in the two groups 支 and 元 in Old Chinese. Professor Yu Xingwu interpreted the oracle - bone character [册口] as ＂cut off＂ while agreeing with Wang Niansun＇s interpretation of its pronunciation. On the basis of classical phonetics, this paper concludes that both misinterpreted [册口] due to their lack of correct understanding of the linguistic history and structure of 删.
