On the Translation of Movie Titles: An Intercultural Perspective

通过考察英汉电影片名翻译的三种基本方法,直译、音译和意译,本文用大量的实例从跨文化交流的视角提出:片名翻译应重视主体间性,坚持底线思维,注意语言凝练,厘清文化指向,做到四个防止,即防止望文生义,防止张冠李戴,防止一味媚俗,防止闭门造车。

After an examination of the three concrete translation methods,literal translation,transliteration and literal translation,in translating movie titles,this paper demonstrates through lots of examples from an intercultural perspective that faithfulness is the bottom line for the translation of movie titles; that the translator should pay full attention to the employment of inter-subjectivity instead of doing translation all alone;that the translation of movie titles should not only attach great importance to both the meaning of the source language and the culture included in it;that translated versions should be concise,exhilarating,appealing and conclusive.
