Virginia Woolf,as the forerunner of English feminism of the 20th century and founder of feminist literary theory, has made an outstanding contribution to the western feminist poetics. 'Angel',which originated from religion, has undergone the variation of its lexical meaning in the patriarchal society, which led to women's suffering in Victorian England. Woolf was the first one who called for 'killing the angle' and repeatedly underscored the intention in her novels. Based on the Marxist theory, the paper tries to explore the cause and intention behind 'the killing of the angel',which is helpful in making a further discussion on the approach to angel's reshaping and return, and demonstrates Woolf's unique and realistic gender ethics.
