Literature Translations by Missionaries for Women Enlightenment and the Modern Enlightenment of Chinese Women

在传教需要、自由派神学和社会福音运动的共同作用下,从1890年代初至1930年代末,在华新教传教士发起了一场旨在启蒙中国女性的西方文学译介活动。传教士以文学为载体,从社会责任、自我意识、婚姻家庭等多方面对中国女性进行现代思想的启蒙,促使她们思考自己的处境和角色。启蒙文学译介调和了基督教信仰和现代性主张,在基督教的精神坐标系下引入了与中国封建传统迥异的思想和文化,对中国妇女现代启蒙起到了积极的作用。

It is a fact ignored by the mainstream history that from the early 1890 sto the late 1930 s,Western Protestant missionaries in China launched an intensive translation and publication activity of Western literature aiming at the enlightenment of Chinese women.It was brought about by both practical mission requirements and the nurture of Liberal Theology and Social Gospel ideas.With the aid of translated literature,the missionaries tried to enlighten Chinese women with modern ideas and encourage them to think about their role and condition in society,the themes covering social responsiblities,selfconsciousness,marriage and family,and so on.The modern liberal thoughts introduced and rendered in harmony with Christianity made a striking contrast to traditional Chinese ideas and contributed to the enlightenment and modern transformation of Chinese women.
