Grassland protection red line project is based on the basic connotation of grassland red line and ecological engineering and regards ecological priority as its basic principle and has the major functions of ecology,industry and culture. It is a complex system covering many types of projects according to regional resources,environment and social economic development,which is closely related to the sustainable development of pastoral areas in China. This paper probes into the relationship between them from the economic,ecological,social and ethnic aspects based on the study of the connotation and significance of the sustainable development of grassland pastoral areas and grassland protection red line. The significance of grassland protection red line is further elaborated,aiming to provide new thoughts for the sustainable development of pastoral areas.
