On the Embedded Narrative in SHEN Cong-wen's Novel Husband

沈从文的小说《丈夫》运用了嵌套叙事的叙事技巧。《丈夫》中的嵌套叙事与主体叙事既构成了对比、类比关系,也构成了隐喻关系。在对比、类比关系中,这一叙事手法展示了两种不同的时间观,即社会现代性的时间观和审美现代性的时间观,也展现了两种不同的空间观,即都市空间和乡下空间,作者的写作意图显然都倾向于两种不同的时空观中的后者。嵌套故事对主体故事的隐喻则将这两种不同维度的时间和空间交织、叠加到一起,表达了作者对诗意人生和现实生存的痛苦思考。

Among many of the works,SHEN Cong-wen has adopted the technique of embedded narrative,and Husband is surely the most matured as well as representative of all. The embedded narrative in Husband relates to the main narrative in a contrasting and analogical way. Meanwhile,a metaphorical correlation is also discernible between the two. For the contrasting and analogical part,this narrative technique shows two different types of time view possessed by the novelist,one is the time view of social modernity and the other is the time view of aesthetic modernity. At the same time,this technique shows that SHEN＇s concept of the space can also be divided into an urban one as well as a rural counterpart.As for these two time and space views,we can clearly see that SHEN pays more attention to both the latters. The metaphorical correlation between the embedded narrative and main narrative has interwoven and superimposed these two sets of time and space,and thus showed SHEN＇s painful contemplation of a poetic life and the earthly existence.
