Essence in TCM is the unity of quality and quantity. The quality is characterized by pure, mellow, solid and conserved. Its an intrinsic nature different from other categories. While the quantity needs to be sufficient, abundant and releasing properly, which is a exterior nature. This theory originates from theory of essence qi in ancient Chinese philosophy and the thinking mode of analogism. The ancient thinking mode was of probability but basically followed the acquaintance principle of relation dialectics between " substances" and " concrete forms of substances" : Substances are abstracted and generalized from the concrete forms of substances. There is no substance without concrete form of substance.
