Defeated by foreign troops in the Second Opium War( 1856—1860),the Qing government had to pay 8,000,000 tael of silver to France as the war indemnity. It was stipulated that one million was the compensation for the losses of French merchants, missionaries and protected persons and the left was used as the war fund. Having the research solidly based on archives of France's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the present paper investigates thoroughly the allocation of the one-million compensation and in doing so it brings to light the embarrassing truths involving France's extortion of money from the Qing government, the collusion between French government and missionaries, and the evilness of foreign firms.
