Yan Siqi and Li Dan were all famous maritime and pirate leaders in Fujian in the 17th century. They engaged in maritime trade and plunder in Taiwan, and had a close relationship. After Dutch colonists invaded the Straits of Taiwan, there had been extensive exchanges and close cooperation between them, but soon they became estranged from each other. All this, to a large extent, had something to do with Li Dan. In fact, behind this delicate relationship, we could see the complex political, economic and military struggles between Fujian authorities and civil maritime power and western colonialists.
