Analysis of Mother Characters in Edward Albee's Plays

爱德华·阿尔比的戏剧作品的主题是个人应积极塑造社会,而不要把社会标准留给别人去决定。重点研究了阿尔比笔下的母亲角色及其所塑造的荒诞性和现实性,认为其作品中的女性形象可以分为两种:"真正的母亲"和"臆想或非母亲",而母性或非母性角色的特征都是角色发展的一个重要方面,通过对母亲角色的分析可以看出,阿尔比对20世纪中晚期美国女性所期望的美国梦进行了批判。

Edward Albee＇s regular theme is that individuals should shape their own society actively, with- out leaving the determination of social standards to others. This study focuses on Albee＇s realistic and ab- surd mother characters, which belong to two categories in his plays： ＂real mothers＂, and ＂imaginary or non-mothers＇. The motherhood or non-motherhood of the character is an important aspect of that charac- ter＇s development. By analyzing real mother characters, we can see how Albee comments on the American dream, as it was desired by American women in middle and late of 20th century.
