湖南时务学堂是中国近代史上一所著名的学堂,也是湖南第一家新式学堂。在教育宗旨上,时务学堂将中国传统书院的人格教育与近代西方大学的知识教育结合起来,以培养出既有士大夫精神人格、又拥有西方社会科学、自然科学等知识和思想的近代知识分子。在教育内容、课程安排上,时务学堂将中国传统书院教学内容与西方大学教育教学课程结合起来。在教育方法上,时务学堂将中国传统书院教学方法与西方大学教育教学方法结合起来。时务学堂兼传统书院与近代大学之长的特点,为中国高等教育转型做出了重要探索。

Hunan Shiwu Academy,a renowned school in modern history of China is the first new-style school in Hunan Province.In terms of teaching objectives,the school aims to integrate knowledge-oriented education of western universities and personality education of traditional Chinese academies,so as to turn out modern scholars with proficient understanding of both Chinese and western ideologies.In terms of curriculum,the school combines courses of western universities and teaching materials of traditional Chinese academies.The school also explores to integrate different teaching methods.With advantages of traditional academies and modern universities,Hunan Shiwu Academy has contributed greatly to the transformation of higher education in China.
