An Outstanding Academic Book: The Preface to The Long Chronicle of Duan Yucai by Professor Wang Huabao

以人的自然属性为标杆,按时间顺序逐项记录人处于社会的言、行、思及其历程与效应,这就形成"年谱"的著作形式,可以说,年谱是处于社会中的个体人的编年史。王华宝教授的《段玉裁年谱长编》是一本具有显著特色的高品质的作品,体现了《孟子》"知人论世"的学说。这本煌煌六十余万言的大书,以充分的史料"知"段玉裁其人其事,进而"论"乾嘉之世、乾嘉学术;"论"乾嘉之世、乾嘉学术则是为了"知"段玉裁。此《段玉裁年谱长编》将段学的研究向前推进了一步,有功于学术多矣。

The compilation of chronicles is conducted by taking people’s natural attributes as a benchmark, and by recording their words, their behavior, their thought, their process and their effect in their society in chronological order. In other words, the chronology is a chronicle of the individual in society. The Long Chroni-cle of Duan Yucai by Professor Wang Huabao is a high-quality work with outstanding characteristics, refecting the theory of “evaluating the world with the understanding of the author” in Mencius. This great book of over 600, 000 words evaluates Duan Yucai with sufcient historical materials in order to comment on the society and academy in the Qianlong and Jiaqing Reigns of the Qing Dynasty. And the comment on the society and academy contributes to a better evaluation of Duan Yucai. The Long Chronicle of Duan Yucai helps to push forward the study of Duan Yucai and it is also conducive to the academic circle.
