清朝统治者为巩固统治地位,使天下有才华的贤士都能为其服务,大力推行科举制度,笼络天下的知识分子,在专制科举制度的影响下,吴敬梓在《儒林外史》中对士子精神世界和他们在现实生活中的"壮举"进行描写,塑造许多痴迷崇拜、走火入魔、欺世盗名、附庸风雅、超然脱俗、保持真性的士子形象。
