Mineralogical and geochemical applications of Mssbauer spectroscopy have devel-oped rapidly over the past 25 years.Most of the applications in this area can be con-sidered as fingerprint techniques.Much attention has also been paid to the use ofMssbauer spectroscopy in quantitative estimates,such as the determination ofFe^(3+)/Fe^(2+)ratio,iron site population in minerals and the relative numbers of iron at-oms in each mineral phase of a bulk rock sample.The quantitative use of Mssbauerspectroscopy is based on the formula(Bancroft,G.M.,1973):
