C.N. Adichie, a famous contemporary Nigerian novelist, is regarded by critics as one of the third-generation African women writers. In Purple Hibiscus, she addresses postcolonial themes such as politics and culture from the microcosmic per- spective of family life. The conflict between European values and the Nigerian culture as reflected in the tragic figure of Eugene voices her positive attitude toward the traditional culture. This novel also describes the relentless struggle of marginalized women against various authorities and discusses the important postcolonial issue of the reconstruction of national cultures.
