Disillusioned Passenger SU Manshu and the New-culture Movement

苏曼殊一生短暂,行色匆匆,生逢风云变幻时代的他带着旧时代的印记,向往着新时代的曙光。他貌似沉沦,却一心革命。他独行踽踽,却并不孤单。他一方面和政治人物有千丝万缕的联系,另一方面又和文坛上的精英分子过从甚密。当然政治与文化,乃至文学时有瓜葛,很难分清。他和新文化运动发起人陈独秀过从甚密,和刘半农时有往来,曾参加过周氏兄弟为成员的组织,亦曾写信给陈独秀、蔡元培,拟申请公费去意大利学习绘画,这是他去世前一年的事,由此可见其短暂的红尘往事中紧紧联系着新文化运动。

SU Manshu spent his short and hasty life in the politically changeable era,embodied with a distinct mark of that era and a strong resolution for a new one.Under his apparent degradation,he was devoted to revolution heart and soul.He struggled alone,but not lonely.Besides his close contact with influential political figures,he maintained an intimate social communication with literary elites.It is apparently difficult to distinguish politics from culture and even literature,owing to their intermingling relationships.Together with a close contact with New Culture Movement initiator CHEN Duxiu,he held an occasional contact with LIU Bannong,and even joined the organization of which Zhou brothers were members.Just one year before his death,he wrote letters to CHEN Duxiu and CAI Yuanpei,hoping to apply for an official grant to study drawing in Italy.All of these activities point to a simple fact that his short life was tightly associated with the New Culture Movement.
