In his novel The Golden Mirror(the first edition 1772/the second edition 1794),German writer C.M.Wieland explores several political issues, one of which is the 'Enlightened Despotism'movement,an important historical occurrence in Europe in the second half of the 18th century. This study focuses on the'Court Talk'story from the second edition of The Golden Mirror. The analysis concludes that the narrative in this story illustrates the interactions between the European/German Enlightenment movement and absolute monarchy in the 18th century and especially in the era of the 'Enlightened Despotism'.
