This paper focuses on a few themes in Stendhal's novels:height and depth, which not only correspond with the plot's ups and downs, but also incarnate the characters'spiritual experiences.By analyzing the geographical images such as peaks, towers, prisons, cathedrals, caves and so on,the paper attempts to explore their philosophical and aesthetic dimension in Stendhal's writing. It tries to show how a distinctive and poetic sensibility represents at the same time Stendhal's philosophy of life and his literary choices.
