There is close relationship between the exorcising dance ＂Ai She＂of Shouyang County,Shanxi Province and the folk legend of ＂Huang Di Defeating Chi You＂. The performance of Ai She is legitimized by the context of war with ghost masks constructed by the folk legend. Thus the ritual of Ai She is given the symbolic interpretation. On the other hand,the context of war with ghost masks rejects other interpretations of Ai She. In the perspective of the context constructed by the folk legend,the exorcising dance＂Ai She＂is regarded as a contemporary folklore item.
