Dilemma Impossible to Be Shaken Off: Tang Zhen's Integrity Thought and Its Paradox

唐甄是明末清初对专制君主提出大胆批判的重要思想家,他对封建官僚制度下的腐败问题进行了深刻揭露,他把防治腐败的焦点集中在如何任用、监管官吏上,这是唐甄廉政思想的核心理念。为此,唐甄提出了一系列防治腐败的具体措施,其中最为核心的是如何选用、管理、监督官吏。但是,面对政治腐败,他一面将腐败的根源溯及于君主,而另一面又将根治腐败的希望和责任寄托于君主,在理论上陷入矛盾不能自拔。

Tang Zhen is an important thinker who boldly criticized the autocratic monarchs in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties,exposing profoundly the problems of corruption in the feudal bureaucracy. He focused on how to appoint and superviseofficials,whichis Tang Zhen ’ score idea ofbuildinga clean government. Therefore, Tangput fomard a seriesof concrete measuresto prevent and cure corruption, out of which, he thought, the core measures are selection, administration, and supervision.But faced with political corruption, he traced its root to the mo narchs, while at the same time he put hope and the eradication of corruption on the monarch, trapping himself in theoretical contradiction without any solution. It was impossibleto have his idea of building a clean government out of vicious circle of traditional mentality. However, die theoretical dilemmafound in his ideas is still worth consideration.
