There exist rich varieties of the biography of Ye Fashan. However, the writers identify him differently due to their different stances and perspectives. Ye Fashan was not only a Taoist master enjoying a very great reputation,but also a very high-ranking and proud official of the dynasty,based on his experience both as a Taoist missionary preaching and promoting Taoism and as a senior minister of the dynasty involved in the administration and discussion of state affairs,particularly in the sudden and perplexing changes of the political situations in the early years of the Tang dynasty. Though he had two identities,his identity as a wise politician was blurred by his identity as Taoist master.
