A Comparative Study of Symbolism in A Dream of Red Mansions and The Scarlet Letter

《红楼梦》与《红字》分别作为中美象征主义的文学作品著称于世界。本文从比较文学的研究视角,对比分析了这两部作品中相似的"红色"、"溪"、"园"、"镜"4个象征及其在展现象征意义、表现主题、刻画人物形象方面的异同,说明盛行于18世纪的象征主义及其艺术手法在特定的社会历史文化语境下,在反映社会历史现实差异性的同时,却也存在着惊人的相似之处。

The two eternal masterpieces, A Dream of Red Mansions and The Scarlet Letter emerge as the unprecedented works of Symbolism in the world literature. This article argued four symbols like ＂red color＂, ＂streamlet＂, ＂garden＂ and ＂mirror＂ in the perspective of comparative literature to probe the similarity and distinctiveness in adopting these symbols to reach themes and to portray figures, through which we can comprehend that the prevailing Symbolism and the metaphorical meanings of the symbols in the 18^th century restricted to the specific social and historical context have demonstrated much diversity and some ineluctable similarities in reflecting the social reality as well .
