After independence, India witnessed the rise of a "new novel movement". At that time people, starting to learn from western literary writing skills, tried to explore a new way of narrative, took the middle class as their main description object, and paid attention to the survival state of individuals and their inner world. The development of novel creation was eventually promoted. But during the late period, most of the new novels showed a formalism tendency, which made the vigorous literary movement end up as a past page in the history of Indian literature. Novelist Amarkant emerged during this period. His literary creation started in the torrent of "new novel movement", and his works kept a style of vivid realism while retaining some characteristics of the new novels. He observed Indian middle society calmly and deeply, and became one of the most important realistic novelists in post-Premchand period. This paper is an introduction to and an evaluation of the real image of In- dian middle society after independence through Amarkant' s representative novels.
