There are merely about 126 fragments of Heraclitus of Ephesus available to us nowadays, but the meanings of these fragments are still very fascinating to many scholars and glittering in the conflict of different interpretations. Investigations of the original Greek text of Heraclitus' four fragments show that his river image can be interpreted in three different ways: we can, we cannot, we both can and cannot step into the same river twice. They are reasonable interpretations of the meaning of his river image, but stress is being laid on different aspects. Further penetration into why these interpretations make sense contributes to a better understanding of change and non-change of particular objects of our cognition.
