Sponsored by Hong Kong Film Development Council's First Feature Fihn Initiative, Mad World is a low-cost production that was a box-office success. But the tight budget has, on the contrary, made it possible for the film to be artistically unique, with such features as fixed camera, near shots and close-ups, based on interior scenes rather than shooting on location. The two young filmmakers, director Wong Chun (Huang Jin )and scriptwriter Florence Chan (Chen Chuheng), have successfully caught attention and aroused discussions among people from all walks of life with their portraiture of mental illness and relevant social issues. The male protagonist' s bipolar disorder is the main storyfine that brings out a variety of relationships between father and son, mother and her children, and friends, which is also the story of the Hong Kong people as they are at present that is full of a local colour and contemporary significance. The narrow city space, the poverty-stricken lives of the people living at the lower rungs of the society and the spiritual pressure people live under have all formed part of the contents the film is set to express.
