A Comparative Study of Three English Versions of Lin Daiyu's The Flowers' Funeral Song

"冷月葬花魂",《红楼梦》中《葬花吟》一诗对整部小说意义不言而喻,关于它的英译较常见有三个版本,即杨宪益、戴乃迭译本,大卫·霍克斯译本和许渊冲译本,由于文化背景与语言环境的不同,三个译本呈现出不同的面貌。本文拟从词句、文化等方面分析三者的不同及其原因。

The meaning of the poem ＂The Flowers＇ Funeral Song＂ in ＂A Dream of Red Mansions＂ is self-evident. The translations of the poem are well known in three English versions, namely, Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang＇ s translation, David Hawkes＇ translation and Xu Yuanchong＇ s translation. Because of cultural background and language environment of different, three translations show different faces. This paper intends to analyze the differences and their causes from the aspects of words, sentences, culture and so on.
