The Early History of the Modern Western Hospital in China:the Ophthalmic Hospital at Canton (1835～1855)

广州眼科医局乃美国美部会所派遣的美籍传教士伯驾于1835年在广州创办的西式医院,是当时首家较为系统的西式医院。该医院在1835年~1855年草创期间免费治疗近5万多病例,除主要诊治眼科疾病外,还进行过多次当时中医十分少见的切除肿瘤与乳房、截肢、切取结石等手术。其后广州眼科医局其医务传道模式为其他通商口岸西式医院所借鉴,医局成为西医东渐和近代西方医学向全国辐射发展的重要前沿,也是了解近代西医在华早期传播的重要范本。

The Ophthalmic Hospital was founded by a American protestant missionary doctor Peter Parker who belongs to The American Board of Commissioners For Foreigns Missions at Canton in 1835,it＇s the first a systematic western hospital in china.The hospital had free treatment for nearly more than 50000 cases,main treatment for eye disease,also tumor and breast cancer,amputation,chipped stone surgery.Chinese patients＇ attitude to western medicine and the performance in the process of diagnosis and treatment were surprising.The medical missionary method of the Ophthalmic Hospital was spread to the other palace by the Medical Missionary Society in China from 1838,become the main imitation for the spread of modern western medicine in china.This hospital is the hospital is the most important modal to understand the early history of the spread of the modern western medicine in China.
