Tang Ting-shu and the Development of the Shipping Industry at the Late Qing Dynasty

唐廷枢是晚清洋务运动史上的一位重要人物,其在实掌轮船招商局期间,恪尽职守,进行了一系列的新活动,如采取资本主义先进管理方式改组轮船招商局,首创官办机械船舶维修业、船舶保险业,兼并外国轮船公司与签订"齐价合同"等措施,不仅推动了轮船招商局的发展,而且对晚清的航运近代化进程产生了深远影响。

Tang ting-shu is an important figure in the history of the westernization movement in the late Qing Dynasty. During his tenure in China Merchants Steamship Navigation Company,he was loyal to his duty and carried out a series of innovate activities. For instance,he reformed it with advanced capitalistic management. He started the government-run mechanical engineering and insurance,merged foreign steamship companies,and signed "price contract". This not only contributed a lot to the development of the company but also to the process of its modernization.
