Historical Origins of Public Streets

中文关于街道的建筑学讨论往往是设计先导的,非历史的。然而,除非找到确切的历史情境,街道不可能是自洽的,被自上而下地"设计"。街道的类型学常常被误解,它的方法只有考虑了时间的因素才能适于讨论街道在历史语境中的演化。文章认为街道既可以被看成一种给定的城市形态,也是一种积极参与现实的要素。对于街道作用的迥异看法历史地决定了街道不断更新的功能,最终也改变了街道的设计进程。

The discussions on public streets within the field of architecture in China tends to be designoriented and ahistorical. However, a street can＇t be considered as self-contained, or designed by a topdown approach, unless being framed in a specific historical context. The typology of the street is often misunderstood, and related methods can only be applied to the discussion of the street＇s historical evolvement when the temporal element is considered.The article examines the definition of street in terms of a dynamic parameter that partakes the reality,in addition to a given urban form. Throughout the history, constantly changing views of public streets have informed the street＇s renewing functions, and ultimately its design process.
