《吕氏春秋》与《新语》分别成书于秦即将统一的前期与大汉甫立之际,面临的诸多问题非常相似,《新语》在新政权意识形态建构的紧迫性,以何种方略治国,加强德治教化、弥补秦任法之不足,对政权的合理性与权力制衡等方面,对《吕氏春秋》有所借鉴。就具体内容而言,有32处征引了《吕氏春秋》,有些旨意、语词与吕书相近,还有的文异义同。《吕氏春秋》启下,《新语》承上,在秦汉之际大变局中,共同在意识形态、政治文化领域有探索建构之功,影响深远,洵有探讨之必要。
