元代是我国历史上民族大融合的重要时期,也是族群语言接触与碰撞最为活跃的时期,语言兼用成为元代社会语言生活最典型的特点。元代多族群杂居共处的居住格局、宽松的语言文字政策等使元代出现大量双语人甚至多语人,而学校教育、科举、婚姻、宗教等因素是元代语言兼用现象广泛存在的重要影响因子。

The Yuan Dynasty is the important period of ethnic integration in the history of China and also the most active period of language contact. The social life of the Yuan Dynasty was mainly characterized by the multi-purpose use of language.The multi-racial inhabitation pattern and the loose language and word policy produced many bilinguals or even polyglots in the Yuan Dynasty. Education,imperial examination,marriage,religion and other factors were the important factors influencing the widespread multi-purpose use of language in the Yuan Dynasty.
