Hometown for Border-crossers: The world of Yuhi

The book Yuhi by Lee Yangji explores the confusions of border-crossers in pursuing ego identity through a rootseeking tour of the second generation Koreans living in Japan. The eponymous character Yuhi is surrounded by the aftermath of colonialism, and realizes the huge gap between ideal and reality. Her refusal to completely accept the cultural coercion makes it hard for her to blend into South Korean society. In her trinity fantasy of a modem country, which consists of language, nationality and nation, Yuhi wavers in the contrary relationships between Korean and Japanese, South Korean people and Japanese, as well as South Korea and Japan. It seems as though Yuhi is defeated by the culture shock when she is frustrated with her study in South Korea and has to return to Japan, and this fact is consistent with an understanding of the reality of second generation Koreans in Japan. At the same time, her notes imply a possibility of communication beyond languages.
