The Negotiations Among Progress,Tradition and Privilege: The Planning and Construction of Hankou's Riverfront Avenue

20世纪20-30年代,汉口进行了大规模的城市改造,不仅重塑了城市空间格局,还尝试将城市装扮整洁。聚焦当时最早启动、最具影响力的工程——汉口沿江马路,梳理阐释其规划设计理念和建设历程。基于实证和理论思考,尝试进一步开展微观化、日常化、多元化的考察,揭示沿江马路工程建设背后现代市政建设识见、帝国主义特权、封建传统思想的斗争和博奕,以期为中国近代都市空间研究提供一种新思路。

The decades of the 1920 s-1930 s saw a major effort to remake Hankou. The thrusts of reformist efforts included remaking the urban spatial regime, and sprucing up the city. This paper focuses on Hankou＇s Riverfront Avenue, the first and most influential project in Hankou ＇ s urban reconstruction movement. It elucidates the urban planning and design ideas and implementation process. Based on empirical and theoretical thinking, the study carries out micro-scaled, routinized and diversified investigations. It reveals the conflicts and negotiations among modern municipal knowledge, imperialist privilege and feudal traditions. The research intends to provide some insights about urban space in modern China.
