This paper takes four movies, Kagemusha, A Passage to India, It's My Day Off, and Shall We Dance, as examples of the representations of Asian cities and architecture in pre-modern, colonial, socialist, and post-modern periods. Through an in-depth analysis on building types, architectural styles, spatial layout and human activities in relationship to issues such as spatial organization and contest, urban governance, power exercise, as well as gender construction, the author argues that movie materials are valuable resources for understanding, studying, and teaching the history of Asian cities and architecture.
