Japan and the Soviet Union (Russia) are close neighbors separated only by a strip of water, but in terms of mutual perception, they are quite unfamiliar with each other. There are many factors that affect both countries' mutual perceptions, among which rather important ones include wars, revolutions, political factions, economic ties and external factors. Specifically, the Japanese P.O.W issue, the issue of northern territories and the issue of Japanese militarism have always been obstacles to both countries' mutual perceptions. The United States, China, and other socialist countries are important external factors that influence mutual perceptions between Japan and the Soviet Union or Russia. On the whole, until the Soviet Union collapsed, the mutual perceptions between Japan and the Soviet Union still have not reached inepthintegration.
