In the narration of the fortune of Richard Ⅱ,Shakespeare's history play Richard Ⅱ touches upon the argument about whether subjects have rights to resist or depose the monarch while facing tyranny. The question is one of the central issues in postReformation Europe which relates to the origin of the legitimacy of kingship. By narrating the contend for power between Richard and Bolingbroke, the play reflects the debate on kingship among Anglicanism,Catholicism and Puritanism,ie.,between absolutism( the doctrine of divine right of kings and the doctrine of absolute obedience) and constitutionalism( the contract theory and the resistance theory) during Shakespeare's time. The play reflects English people's contradictory attitudes towards tyranny in the background of the political thoughts of the late Elizabethan age.
