Intellectual Property Protection and Quality Structure of Export——An Empirical Study Based on US Import Data

文章采用CEPII全球贸易特征数据库2000-2010年美国HS6分位进口贸易数据,利用面板数据模型实证研究了知识产权保护对高、中、低品质出口产品种类数及其占比的影响,发现知识产权保护水平的提高对各档次出口产品种类数的影响存在差异:对高、中品质出口产品种类数的影响显著为正,且对前者的促进作用高于后者;对低品质产品的影响并不显著,而对无价格信息产品存在负向影响,加强知识产权保护能够显著地改善出口品质结构。加入地理因素和进行多项稳健性检验后发现,上述结论具有很高的可靠性。

Using USA import panel data over the period 2000-2010 from CEPII Trade Flows Characterization dataset, this paper studies the impact of strengthen- ing intellectual property protection on export quality. The results show that the impact of strengthening IPR protection on exports varies for different quality lev- els. It can stimulate the variety of high and medium quality exports significantly, and the impact is larger for high quality ones. The impact is not significant for low quality products and significantly negative on products without price informa- tion. It is concluded that strengthening IPR protection can improve export quality structure. The conclusion is still reliable after taking geographical distance into ac- count and undertaking many robust checks.
