In light of Joseph Campbell＇s Hero Pattern,this thesis analyzes the initiation theme in Pullman＇s masterpiece,His Dark Materials Trilogy. Having gone through the initiation-adventure-return hero pattern with a number of hardships and tests,the protagonists Lyra and Will gain in self-discovery and take up the social responsibilities entrusted to them. Finally they choose to sacrifice their love for the salvation of the human soul,which is a perfect ending for this initiation story.
