In the 1920s and 1930s, there appeared a number of travel notes and sketches taking the South Ocean as its target in China. This article discusses the Nanyang travels of Liang Qichao, Huang Zunxian and SU Manshu, the political comments of Kang Youwei, and the Nanyang essays of Fiji and Ba Jin, and discuss the mentality behind these texts and writers. The Nanyang writing group not only showed the leisure of the traditional travel literature, but also inherited the rational thinking of the intellectuals. Nanyang became the temporary transcendence of intellectuals who resisted the liberation politics by living polities, reflecting their complex mood between tradition and modernity.
