“开辟草莱”的“舵手与灵魂”——论张元济对中国现代初等教育的卓越贡献

Zhang Yuanji: Pioneer,Steersman and Soul of the Commercial Press——A Brief Description of Zhang Yuanji's Outstanding Contributions to Modern Chinese Elementary and Secondary Education

张元济不仅是众所周知的一代文化出版大家,还是中国一代教育大家,他为中国现代初等教育即中国现代中小学教育做出了无与伦比的贡献;首先,他组织人员精心编撰了著名的"最新教科书",开创了中国初等教育教材编写的新纪元;其次,他知人善任,支持任命孙毓修负责编译出版了影响巨大的《童话》丛书,催生了现代意义上的中国儿童文学;再次,他主持创办了《少年杂志》,组织孙毓修等人编著《少年丛书》等多年,使得商务印书馆在青少年儿童读物的编撰翻译方面居功甚伟。这些功绩都对中国现代教育影响深远,值得铭记和借鉴。

Zhang Yuanji,not only a great publisher but also an excellent educator,contributed a lot to Chinese elementary and secondary education. First,he organized excellent editors to compile the series of Latest Modern Textbooks with efforts, ushering a new era of textbook compilation for Chinese elementary education. Second, he judiciously appointed Sun Yuxiu as the editor-in-chief to take years of hard work to compile the influential series of Fairy Tales which generated the modern children's literature in China. Last,he managed to launch Teenagers Magazine and organized editors like Sun Yuxiu to compile Teenagers Series for years,which made the Commercial Press contribute a lot to the compilation and translation of books for adolescents. All these contributions,having profoundly influenced modern education in China,deserve remembrance and study.
