On the Relation between the Water Transportation of the Grand Canal and the Development of the Manufacturing Industry along It

运河的贯通、漕运的发达,引发运河沿岸产业结构的变化,制造业与手工业的迅速发展。特别是明清两代,京城里人们的衣食住行、国家运作、国防建设等各方面的所需物资,都要靠运河运送。因此,就促进了造船、冶铁、煮盐、酿酒、编织、纺织、漆器、瓷器、丝织等各个行业的发展繁荣。

The busy water transportation of the Grand Canal,linking upHangzhou with Beijing,caused great changes in the structure of the manufacturing and handicraft industries along the Canal and greatly promoted them. Beijing heavily relied,especially in the Ming and Qing Dynasties,on this " Grand Canal" for materials both to provide for its basic necessities and to maintain the state operationand military defenses. TTherefore,it promoted the development and prosperity of industries making ships,iron,salt,wine,knitting ware,textiles,lacquer ware,porcelain,silk,etc.
