The Functions of Humor in A Dream of Red Mansions——With Reference to Wang Xifeng, Lin Daiyu and Grandma Liu

《红楼梦》是中国古代白话小说的代表作,它虽是一部荡气回肠的悲剧小说,其中也包含大量的幽默内容,多与人物有关。以王熙凤、林黛玉、刘姥姥三位人物为考察对象,探析《红楼梦》中的幽默艺术手法及其作用:一是塑造多面立体的人物形象;二是表现、深化了家族悲剧主题、爱情悲剧主题;三是在多个叙事场景化解尴尬,活跃气氛。

As a representative ancient work in vernacular Chinese, the soul-stirring tragic novel A Dream of Red Mansions contains a large number of humorous elements which are usually related to characters. This paper takes Wang Xifeng, Lin Daiyu and Grandma Liu as the research objects, analyzes and summarizes the functions of humor. The paper arrives at the summary that 3 functions are found in the humor of the novel： humor is adopted for 1. the molding of multifaceted and stereoscopic images, 2. the presentation and deepening of themes of family and love tragedy, 3. the elimination of embarrassments and adjustment of atmosphere on in different narrative scenes.
