Rockery is the representative and essence of Chinese classical gardens. This research was initiated to analyze the role and value ofrockery in classical gardens from the aspects of spiritual symbol, historical change, gardening technique, aesthetic ideal, functional design and garden culture. The study found that the rockery contains noble spiritual connotation, and it has rare historical value and extraordinary technical difficulty. Rockery could also be considered as the key element of the functional design of gardens, and the representative of the aesthetic ideal of Chinese literati and Chinese traditional culture. It is hoped that the study of the function and value ofrockery can provide reference for the study of Chinese classical gardens.
