This paper introduces the background and nine different editions of An Encyclopaedia of Architecture authored by Joseph Gwilt and Wyatt Papworth, the British reference book for Jianzhu Xinfa （New Construction Methods）. By comparing the purpose, structure, illustrations and texts of the two books in English and Chinese, it explicates between them the differences, connections, trajectory of development and the reasons.
