This article takes Yang Lianfen's new book, Romantic China:Radical Trends and Literature from a Gender Perspective (1890- 1940 ), as the subject of discussion, focusing on its key aspect of women's liberation. The adoption of a gender perspective allows the representation of the vulnerable groups who were obscured in the process of modernization. A special feature of the book is its rediscovery of the neglected Ellen Key's theory of Motherhood, impacted by the" Motherliness" and the Ethics of Care, the author brings up the statement of" dutiful wife and kind mother" again, which is a corrective and strategic expression based on the historical circumstance. Furthermore, the author makes a further rethinking of the Chinese modernization.
