The article discusses the disturbances caused by the Dong-bandits (峒寇) in the moutain area of South China in the Song dynasty in South Jiangxi. In fact, Dong-min(峒民), like its contrary expression,Shengmin (省民), was a social category rather than an ethnic marker. Whereas Shengmin referred to tax-payers,but Dong-bandits were those who did not pay tax. Just because Dong-people were also intensified by the tax burden imposed by government, they rose up. Government tried their best to keep the the boundary between Dong's area and the Shengmin's area in the Song dynasty, but the boundary was always ambiguous. This history process may help us understand the Hakka's history.
