《金瓶梅》创作的地理主背景有临清说、徐、淮、扬说、绍兴说等多种,而"北京说"是出现最早,历时最长,且影响较大的一种。吴晗先生较早提出作品"很多描叙都是以北京做背景的";吴晓铃考证出《金瓶梅》里出现的清河县城郊地名可在北京城里找到的市坊、府邸、衙署、寺观的名目多达五十六处之多;新一代学者丁朗主要从作品的饮食、街巷府观名称、风习、方言口语、故事内容及流传等众多方面,更为细致深入地论证说明作品与北京的密切关系,令《金瓶梅》创作背景北京说有更为坚实的根基。此外,从《金瓶梅》问世最早传播的四则材料,也可说明作品创作背景在北京地区的极大可能性。

There are many academic theories on geographical background of the creation of Jin Ping Mei, including Linqing theory, Xu theory, Huai theory, Yang theory and Shaoxing theory. The “Beijing theory” is the earliest, longest and most influential one. Scholar WuHan presented that many descriptions are based on Beijing. Scholar Wu Xiao-ling verified that more than fifty-six items as square, mansion, yamen, temples described in Jin Ping Mei can be found in Beijing. Scholar DingLang also demonstrated the close relationship between Jing Ping Mei and Beijing from aspects of diet, street name, customs, dialect, story contents and circulation. These studies provided a solid foundation for Beijing theory which claimed the creation background of Jin Ping Mei is located in Beijing. In addition, the four early spread materials of Jin Ping Mei also can explain the great possibilities of the creation background in Beijing.
