论李提摩太对《西游记》的索隐式翻译

On Timothy Richard's Implicit Translation of Journey to the West

从话语分析的角度,考察晚清传教士李提摩太将一部饱含东方寓意的小说《西游记》转换成一部弘扬基督教义的作品《天国行》。李提摩太从宗教考量的角度出发,将《西游记》中的佛教思想进行基督教阐释,借用索隐派的方法对小说中的宗教寓意进行基督教义的转换,通过误译、漏译等方式进行全面的话语改造。这种索隐式的翻译策略能够得以实践,与《西游记》本身的丰富性不无关系,在反教运动逐浪相高的背景下,李提摩太的对这部传统名著的话语改造不啻为一个明智之选,但就翻译本身而言《天国行》很难称得上是翻译,它更像是一种再创作。

From the perspective of discourse analysis,this paper studies that in the late Qing Dynasty,the missionary,Timothy Richard,converted the novel Journey to the West,which was full of oriental meaning,into A Mission to Heaven that carried forward the Christian doctrine. From the point of view of religious considerations,Timothy Richard explained Christianism in Journey to the West. He carried out the transformation of the Christian doctrine in the fiction of the novel,through misinterpretation,missing translation,etc.,to carry out a comprehensive discourse transformation. This kind of implicit translation strategy can be practiced,and the richness of Journey to the West itself is not unrelated. In the context of anti-religious movement,Timothy Richard's transformation is a wise choice;but for the translation itself,A Mission to Heaven is difficult to be called as a translation,which is more like a recreation.
