His image in China has had such a profound impact on the growing up of a generation of the young that Bethune has become their common spiritual father. In the flow of globalization, Chinese and Canadian cultures have been interacting in depth. Since the beginning of the 1990 s, the access made available to the Bethune archive, the introduction to and translation of relevant research material and literary works in Canada, have activated feelings and memories lying dormant amongst readers and writers. With the spirit of a historian, Li Yan and Xue Yiwei, two Canadian-Chinese writers, have uncovered another Bethune. In literature, they produce and reshape the image of a Bethune in the age of globalization, exploring the mystery of living, the paradoxical existence of truth and imagination and the alternative values of belief and passion.
