Renegades, a new novel by Wei Shi, an American-Chinese writer, continues his thinking over‘soul literature'.With apostasy as the core of the narrative, the novel presents the struggle and pain of individuals in the rifts of time by examining the complexity of human nature, successfully shaping the collective images of Chinese Christians, representing and calling for the collective memories scattered in the urban space, and enriching the writing of Shanghai since modern literature. The gender and identity of the writer as well as his cultural position make it possible for the narrative of the novel to gain multiple viewpoints so that the novel has the weight of the depths of history as well as the profundity of sought redemption.
